CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

When Ruby returned to her body, disorientated and missing a portion of her memories, panic seized her at once.

She did not allow the demon to control her body, but it disregarded her as if she were nothing more than the wind during a stormy day. If it performed any sort of sorcery that demolished land and animals and plants, a handful of consequences would soon be served.

Glancing around the area with the red of her vision evaporating away, she caught the sight of Morakques. The area was filled with them—they decorated the ground like rocks on forest paths and painted a masterpiece of scarlet. Everywhere she turned, the brilliant color stared back with a terrifying smile as if taunting her with its ghastliness.

Did I do this? she asked the demon, eyes unwavering on the liquid that oozed from the Morakques’ wounds. The weapon they brought along was stuck steadfastly into themselves as if somebody had yanked it away and used it against them.

No, the whispers said.

She released a sigh of relief; it was not her who performed such a gruesome task. Then, as sudden and hefty like boulders launched from a catapult, a wave of dread engulfed her. If she did not commit the murders, then it must be…

Oh, but Ruby, you need not worry, interjected the demons amid her thoughts. We played a part in the killing.

Color washed from her face as she whirled around to find Lilith blinking furiously as she stumbled. Shadows were gathered around her form, vaguely forming three figures. They were still in a position that resembled kneeling. They had their heads hung low in respect as if praying to a goddess they worshipped.

“What happened?” Ruby asked. She refrained from eyeing the Morakques, frozen in a state of terror.

“I killed them,” Lilith muttered, sounding in a daze. Her lips wobbled as she stared at the symbols traced on the ground.

A spell that could take out a dozen could not have been something simple and without cost, but Lilith stepping in might have just saved her life. Again.

“We have to leave. Now.” It was a short order, but it was crucial in every aspect. Although the witch of all abilities still had plenty of questions and swirling thoughts, she knew that lingering was not a choice.

Swiftly, they grabbed the items of importance and the leftover food, then continued with their journey. They were close to their final location, with their plan still fresh and untouched.

They quickened their footsteps as they walked, exchanging only a few words and responses. The day was still in its early hours, and so they had many more left to go.

The map directed the witches further away from their homes and nearer to death.

The apprehensiveness that built within Ruby’s stomach told her as much.

You are such a pessimist, complained the voices. You are seeking freedom for your kind and possibly more. Be a little more positive; it makes a world of difference.

She did not truly view her mission from another perspective, one that looked at the bigger picture.
